Stem Cell Therapy for Spinal Cord Injury

Spinal Cord Injury

A spinal cord injury (SCI) occurs when damage to the spinal cord disrupts its function, potentially leading to loss of muscle function, senses, and autonomic functions throughout the body. Typically, SCI results from serious accidents or violent events. This type of injury usually has a lasting effect on an individual’s daily life. Roughly 12,500 spinal cord injuries occur in the U.S. each year.

The spinal cord consists of a bundle of nerves that run down the back. These nerves are responsible for carrying signals between the body and the brain, so when the spinal cord becomes damaged, it results in the disruption of this critical transfer of signals. Usually, the spinal cord becomes damaged as a result of a fracture or dislocation of the vertebrae or bone disks.

Due to the complex nature of the spine, various types of SCI can result in different symptoms. There are two main types of SCI: complete, in which the spinal cord is fully damaged and total loss of function occurs; and, incomplete, in which the spinal cord is only partially damaged. SCIs are further classified by the region of the spine in which they occur, which corresponds with various body parts and systems:

  • Cervical nerves (C1 – C4): SCI is most complex when it occurs here, and can result in paralysis of the arms, legs, and hands, and inability to control bladder or bowels.
  • Low-cervical nerves (C5 – C8): These nerves are responsible for the control of the arms and hands; generally, injuries to this area could make daily tasks difficult.
  • Thoracic nerves (T1 – T5): These nerves control the upper chest, abdominal muscles, and mid-back. Patients who experience injury here can generally use a manual wheelchair.
  • Thoracic nerves (T6 – T12): These nerves affect the trunk muscles; injury here could result in difficulty breathing and limited control of the bowels and bladder.
  • Lumbar nerves (L1 – L5): Injuries in this location may result in the loss of the function of the legs and hips.
  • Sacral nerves (S1 – S5): SCI in this area may lead to a slight loss of function of the hips and legs, but little to no control over the bowels or bladder.

In addition to these symptoms, SCI patients may experience headaches, chronic muscle and nerve pain, loss of sexual function, and low libido, among others. While there is currently no treatment method available to fully reverse spinal cord damage, all techniques are focused on preventing further injury and improving quality of life. Rehabilitation, surgery, and medications may be used, depending on the nature of the injury and its symptoms.

Regenerative Medicine Therapy

Stem Cell Therapy for Spinal Cord Injury is an emerging area of treatment for conditions and injuries. Injuries to the spinal cord typically result in the loss of nerve cells. Regenerative therapies have the ability to repair damaged cells and tissues by helping the body’s natural repair kit work more effectively and regenerating new cells.

In particular, Stem Cell Therapy for Spinal Cord Injury has the unique ability of self-renewal, which enables them to become virtually any type of cell. They can, therefore, be directed to become neurons and promote the regeneration of cells damaged by SCI. By focusing on the regeneration of the damaged areas within the spinal cord, stem cells can help to fix the connections between the body and the brain. They do this by secreting cytokines and other cells, which promote the nerve growth factors to activate the body’s natural self-healing mode.

For SCI patients and individuals who have experienced other conditions involving lasting cell or tissue damage, results such as decreased chronic pain and muscle tension improved circulation and motor functions, and increased strength is a potential outcome. Some studies have been performed with stem cell treatment for SCI and other injuries and they have found potential results.

Regenerative Medicine is still considered an experimental procedure and not approved by the FDA. Patients must consider realistic expectations in their research and possible therapy options.
